Ground-based separation provision service for U-space with extended automation.

In order to scale the scope of operations in U-space, especially in urban environments, tactical conflicts are unavoidable. To maintain safety and ensure the required capacity, separation provision in the tactical phase is necessary. While self-separation is a viable solution, most entities participating in U-space are not expected to have the onboard resources to provide self-separation. Moreover, situations where the remote pilot cannot respond tactically to an arising conflict are not currently addressed.

The solution aims to deliver these services. Conflict prediction is based on the separation minima set for the airspace by the U-space separation management (USM) service, detecting conflicts between co-operative U-space operations and between U-space operations and manned flights. The resolution service provides conflict-free instructions and monitors their implementation. Instructions are communicated interactively to the remote pilot to ensure acknowledgement and bilateral understanding. The solution goes a step further by monitoring the acknowledgement and sending minimal instruction(s) directly onboard the vehicle should the remote pilot in charge not acknowledge the situation.

The solution goes beyond regulatory requirements for enabling a U-space airspace and provides input to standardisation needs to allow for harmonised operations managed by different U-space service providers (USSPs) in the same airspace.

The solution primarily delivers benefits in terms of safety, airspace capacity, and automation, while providing added advantages to airspace users by enabling them to safely conduct operations with full awareness of the surrounding airspace.
