The solution has its origin in the need to better manage airspace capacity resources to serve the highest possible air traffic demand in the most efficient way and always respecting demanding aviation safety standards. To achieve this, the SMARTS solution proposes resilient and adaptable sector configurations capable to allocate air traffic demand regular fluctuations or unexpected situations supported by a flexible sector design.

The SMARTS sector design process is based on the assessment of the airspace in all potential scenarios, with different levels of traffic, complexity, weather, etc., and builds sectors adaptable to all of them with the objective of making the best use of available capacity resources. The use of AI/ML techniques for air traffic evaluation supports the design process, providing knowledge of the expected environment.

The airspace configuration process within the SMARTS solution will generate optimal solutions ensuring adequate complexity distribution and safety levels, but most importantly always focusing on the resiliency of the configurations. This characteristic will make it possible to obtain configurations more capable of adapting to changes in air traffic demand and therefore more stable.

As a consequence, the implementation of cost-efficient capacity management will allow more accurate demand and capacity balance (DCB) planning, thus reducing the number of required demand measures.
