Getting AI-head of the weather

Changing weather patterns across Europe are having a direct impact on air traffic operations. The increase in frequency and intensity of convective weather are constraining airspace capacity and increasing delays across the network. This solution aims at improving the quality of weather information available to the aviation community by providing more accurate high-resolution forecasts at longer lead times.

The KAIROS solution integrates multiple sources of forecast and observation data and applies machine learning algorithms to create an AI-based forecast for convection. Artificial intelligence can automatically produce high-precision forecasts that are able to consider the latest weather observations. These digital forecasts can easily be integrated within existing decision support tools to provide end users with the best available weather information. The KAIROS project aims to validate the solution with multiple stakeholders including the Network Manager, Air Navigation Service Providers, and airports.

The KAIROS project is closely coordinating with national MET providers and the European Aviation Safety Administration to ensure the solution is compatible with existing standards and compliant with regulations. This solution builds upon results from an Exploratory Research Project under SESAR 2020, ISOBAR.
