This solution validates the authenticity of ADS-B data and detects potential false reports in military aviation.

Key steps of the ADVERMA process:

Step 1 – Data contact

  • Aircraft transmission: An aircraft broadcasts ADS-B data.

  • Initial ATC reception: An atc unit receives the broadcasted data.

  • Flight existence verification: The atc cross-references the data with internal records to determine if the flight was previously recognized. If not, it proceeds to the next step.

  • Data fusion: The received ADS-B data is fused with multiple sources (primary and secondary surveillance radar, ADS-B, etc.). Probabilistic models assess data integrity. Data considered corrupt is forwarded to the collaborative system.

Step 2 – Communication with a collaborative security system

  • Data transfer to collaborative system: The atc forwards the ADS-B data to an international system that aggregates data from multiple sources.

  • Broad ATC interrogation: The collaborative system queries all participating atcs for any concurrent ADS-B data.

  • Trajectory reconstruction and validation: The system reconstructs the entire flight trajectory (past, current, predicted future positions). Machine learning algorithms compare the trajectory against known flight patterns, behaviors, and schedules to validate credibility and flag anomalies.

Step 3 – Result communication

  • The collaborative system communicates validation results back to the initiating atc. Genuine data allows normal operations to continue, while suspicious data triggers protocols for potentially false reports.

Potential drawbacks and mitigation:

  • For flights entering controlled airspace for the first time, or outside previous atc coverage, confidence in validation may be lower.

  • First contact verification protocols: Additional measures, such as direct communication with the aircraft or message authentication, enhance reliability in these scenarios.
