IRINA- IFR RPAS Integration into European Airspace

Remotely-piloted aircraft System (RPAS) is a specific set of unmanned aircraft, which is remotely operated by a pilot in a control station. Managing RPAS traffic is challenging for controllers since RPAS fly significantly slower than conventional jet airliners and experience latency in communicating or loss of communications link with the ground. The project will build on the results of the ERICA project to continue the research work on the integration of IFR RPAS into the airspace, addressing the required infrastructure, services and detect and avoid functionalities.

The project aims to boost the industry and the UAS/RPAS market by devising well-established operational protocols that will seamlessly integrate military and civil UAS/RPAS BVLOS operations together with manned aviation.

IRINA collaborates with various sectors, including industry, government entities, military, and other airspace users to deliver concrete and verified outcomes to the Regulation and Standardisation authorities. This is aimed at expediting the development of a uniform European foundation that can be utilized by all operators and service providers.

IRINA solutions will address RPAS operations within ATM and the transition between ATM and UTM airspaces. Operations within UTM (U-space) airspaces are addressed by several parallel projects with which the appropriate communication will be established.
