NEURON will design, develop and validate a next-generation airport platform that enhances efficiency, safety and sustainability through advanced automation and AI. The project aims to deliver four integrated solutions to TRL6: solution 1 introduces sustainable taxiing via the tug fleet manager and dynamic taxi tool, reducing fuel burn, CO₂ emissions and air traffic controller (ATCO) workload; solution 2 develops a surface movement awareness system (SMAS), a modular cloud-ready surveillance platform with GNSS monitoring and AI-based links to the network manager; solution 3 provides AI-enabled visual intelligence for digital towers, improving tracking, trajectory smoothing, weather detection and aerodrome safety; solution 4 advances the airport operations plan (AOP) with holistic demand–capacity balancing and AI-based predictors.
Composed of 25 European partners and led by Indra, the project aims to deliver four integrated solutions up to TRL6:
- Solution 0593 focuses on the integrated management of sustainable taxiing (STX) operations at airports. The solution introduces advanced capabilities supporting reduced-engine taxiing, electric taxiing and externally powered taxiing, including dynamic taxi tool functions, STX bot fleet management, A-CDM integration and supporting SMGCS/A-SMGCS services. By integrating AI-based decision support, environmental monitoring and enhanced taxi management functions, the solution aims to improve taxi time predictability, increase operational efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and minimise environmental impact through lower CO₂ emissions and reduced local pollutant generation. The solution targets the demonstration of improved taxi operation performance through mixed taxiing modes in representative operational environments.
- Solution 0594 addresses the need for cost-effective aerodrome traffic awareness services through the development of the enhanced surface movement awareness system (SMAS). The solution provides surveillance and safety-support capabilities based on various sensor configurations, GNSS and ADS-B monitoring functions, fallback capabilities for degraded A-SMGCS operations and integration with B2B Network Manager services
- Solution 0595 delivers AI-enabled visual intelligence capabilities for digital towers and aerodrome operations. It combines real-time tracking, trajectory smoothing, video-based weather detection and aerodrome safety monitoring to improve situational awareness and support human-machine teaming in remote tower operations.
- Solution 0596 advances airport operations plan (AOP) capabilities and airport-network integration through holistic demand-capacity balancing across landside and airside processes, seamless AOP–NOP information exchange, AI-based predictors for flights, passengers and baggage, and QUANT data-quality monitoring.
