The growing use of artificial intelligence in air traffic management and airport operations promises major efficiency gains, but also raises challenges around trust, safety and regulatory compliance. New EU rules, including the EU AI Act and related frameworks, require AI in critical infrastructure to be transparent, explainable and continuously monitored, yet aviation lacks dedicated mechanisms to meet these requirements.
AIC4ATM addresses this gap by developing a modular AI compliance engine that supports ethical, transparent and regulation-ready AI from development to deployment. Combining analysis of European legal frameworks with input from ATM and airport stakeholders, the project applies responsible innovation principles to identify risks, obligations and safeguards. By linking representative AI use cases to a structured risk and compliance framework, the AI compliance engine enables human-centric oversight, certification readiness and safe market uptake. In doing so, AIC4ATM supports trustworthy AI and digital transformation in one of Europe’s most safety-critical sectors.
