The “delegation of airspace” concept enables the delegation of air traffic services (ATS) and contingency between air traffic service units (ATSUs). it leverages virtual centre cloud technologies for the provision of air traffic management (ATM) data services. EXODUS will cater for en-route operations in low to medium traffic density scenarios and is applicable in a contingency use case.

the solution enables more flexible air traffic control (ATC) operations, delivering seamless, safe, secure and cost-effective services for airspace users, and an overall improvement in the performance of air traffic service provision. according to the “y” architectural pattern, the working positions of the receiving ATSU are provided with ATM data by the delegating ATSU, ensuring that service provision in both ATSUs is not impacted by the data flow. deployment will follow virtual centre standardised application interfaces with APIs, as well as legacy interfaces.

this approach is key to implementing the “one data centre” concept, and EXODUS will also identify critical further investments needed for the evolution of ATC tools so that their scope extends beyond a single ATSU area of responsibility. this will support increased capacity in business continuity situations while maintaining the same level of safety. in addition, EXODUS will address requirements for state independence and the treatment of state-sensitive data.
