Assessing the potential of automated vehicles in airport access

Air travel is inter-modal by definition. With the increasing maturation of autonomous driving technology, new modes of access such as automated shuttles can be thought of as additional alternatives. A key question in expectation of the arrival of that technology is how and under which conditions automated vehicles (AVs) can increase comfort, efficiency, and reliability in airport access.

To answer those questions, the solution provides a simulation-based assessment toolkit that allows stakeholders to evaluate the impact of connected, cooperative, and autonomous mobility (CCAM) systems on a range of socio-technological KPIs. Using the solution tool, researchers and planners are able to test different operational configurations from door-to-door-based services, mobility-hub-based services, or services integrated with existing public transport systems. Furthermore, they are able to evaluate different strategies for intelligently coordinating the vehicles in the service fleet.

By the use of the tools developed in this solution, prospective simulation experiments can be set up to assess the interest of deploying CCAM systems in specifically designed airport case studies.
