The fast-paced development of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and advanced air mobility (AAM) opens a new paradigm for dealing with medical transport, natural disasters and accidents. Automated drone operations - that are outside the pilot’s line of sight - can replace traditional road vehicles (courier services, ambulance transport and other crisis response services) and conventional manned aviation (emergency helicopters). This will reduce average response times and increases the availability of emergency and crisis response. The SAFIR-Ready Solution supports healthcare and critical infrastructure by enabling unmanned aviation mission readiness and combining context-driven performance capabilities from all value chain actors that interact through a modular, open and scalable architecture. Automated information and authorisation exchange between these actors will ensure the applicability of the solution in both controlled and uncontrolled airspace, including traversing different operational environments.
The existing regulations and standards are insufficient for effective BVLOS UAS operations within U-space and for the SAFIR-Ready solution. The project will propose new regulations and standards to address current gaps and enable increased automation, interoperability and mission readiness for such operations. In line with stakeholder needs, SAFIR-Ready will deliver regulatory and standardisation recommendations relevant to (a) an open, federated, and inclusive architecture for UTM; (b) standardised information exchanges for automated and quick authorisations; (c) U-space flight rules, conflict resolution and rules of the air for UASs; (d) collaborative interactions amongst ATM and UTM actors; and (e) prioritisation of different UAS missions.
