Clear Skies Ahead: How AI is Transforming Aviation Weather Prediction
Weather continuous to be a challenge for aviation. Phenomena such as turbulence, fog, dust, and icy clouds can create trying conditions for various stakeholders. Turbulence is the leading cause of non-fatal injury to passengers and crew, low visibility conditions due to fog can be challenging for airport operations, and dust and icy clouds can damage engine components leading to additional maintenance and aircraft downtime. Climate change is expected to increase the frequency and intensity of weather evens in the coming years. KAIROS Solution 2 aims at providing aviation stakeholders with improved weather information that can be integrated within existing decision support tools.
The KAIROS solution makes use of multiple sources of forecast and observation data and applies machine learning algorithms to create AI-based forecast for various weather phenomena. This solution builds upon results from an Exploratory Research Project under SESAR 2020, ALARM. Artificial intelligence can automatically produce high-precision forecasts that are able to consider the latest weather observations to provide end users with the best available weather information.
