Efficient management of vertiport network flow, capacity, and operations
For a few years, technological innovation and, in particular, electric propulsion and digital transformation have been radically changing the world of aviation, allowing new ways of moving goods and people in urban and suburban areas. innovative air mobility (IAM) is a new concept of safe, secure, and sustainable air transportation system for passengers and cargo in urban environments, enabled by new technologies and integrated into multimodal transportation systems (EASA definition). vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) are vehicles that differ from conventional rotorcraft and fixed-wing aircraft for multiple reasons such as their level of automation or propulsion. vertiports are the new nodes for VTOL and they will be connected to each other by corridors, thereby creating vertiport networks. these networks will need to be managed efficiently in terms of flow, capacity and operations.
The current standardisation (UK spelling; US was standardization) framework does not address aspects related to a network of vertiports, which is a brand-new concept, and the related services. as per the vertiport services which have not been addressed yet, also the vertiport network services and operations need specific conops detailing the data exchange protocols, emergency procedures management for a network of vertiports, capacity management, corridor management, etc.
