Elevating the FCI mobility & multilink technology for a safer and more interoperable aviation

SESAR is developing an air-ground communication infrastructure capable of supporting future air traffic services. A key part of resilient air-ground communications is the development of a future communications infrastructure (FCI) to support future service concepts.

The solution addresses the management of multilink policies, elevating network performance to meet the demands of critical ATM services in the future, such as trajectory-based operations (TBO) and single pilot operations.

The solution also advances the hyper connected ATM concept enabling the integration of the public non-safety air-ground links in the internet protocol suite (IPS)-based FCI. The aim is to harmonise the use of non-safety links in IPS-based FCI, aligning with the capabilities of solution on hyper connected ATM precursor (#339) and the European Space Agency (ESA) Iris programme.

The Solution builds the solution delivered in SESAR 2020 (Solution # PJ.14-W2-77 FCI Services), which already includes SATCOM (Satellite Communications), LDACS (L-band Digital Aeronautical Communications System) and AeroMACS (Aeronautical Mobile Airport Communications System).

Interoperability between the mobility infrastructure developed in SESAR 2020 and other mobility solutions will also be in the focus of this Solution.

Furthermore, the solution endeavors to refine interoperability requirements for ground/ground network interfaces while streamlining the efficiency and implementation of the overall datalink system.

BENEFITS

  • Improved capacity, efficiency, performance, safety and resilience of the current FCI infrastructure
  • Enabling the implementation and deployment of ATN-IPS in Europe with interoperability of the OSI and IPS networks
  • Improved cost efficiency on the deployment of the overall future communication system
